Cocktail historians - yes, there really is such a thing - describe Hendrick's Gin as the most influential gin of the last 25 years. This is not only due to its excellent quality, which has won the highest prizes in the world of spirits. Rather, Hendrick's has managed to popularise gin again. Whereas before 2008 gin was an outsider product and Bombay Sapphire and Gordon's were more popular, Hendrick's Gin changed the market. Although this gin was significantly more expensive, it sold extremely well. Hendrick's is now one of the best known, and some say one of the best gin brands in the world. This gin scores with its unique flavour experience. Although it has the backbone of a classic gin, it surprises with exotic flavours of roses and cucumber. Incidentally, this is why many glasses of gin are labelled with cucumber, as if this has always been part of it.
Hendrick's Gin was indeed very unusual when it was launched in 1999. And led to many equally creative types of gin being created, which is certainly not the worst development. But Hendrick's Gin is still a temptation. This gin tastes like no other and is both unusual and smooth at the same time.
The gin is mild on the nose. Initially, a slightly sweet, floral aroma develops, with slight hints of citrus. Juniper is only marginally noticeable. The mild impression continues in the mouth. While there are initially flashes of slightly sweet citrus flavours, the rose essences quickly take over without being overpowering. The floral flavour now asserts itself. Gentle peppery notes are perceptible in the finish and finally a very restrained cucumber flavour. Hendrick's is particularly recommended as a gin & tonic with a slice of cucumber.
