How do you combine species conservation and enjoyment? With Elephant Gin, it's extremely easy. The makers of this gin donate 15% of the proceeds to African foundations to save elephants. And so, on the outside, a lot revolves around the grey pachyderms. In addition to the name itself, the bottle label is decorated with an elephant and each bottle is labelled by hand with the name of an elephant.
And the gin itself is a homage to Africa. A total of 14 botanicals are used. Baobab, buchu and devil's claw lend the African spirit. This is supported by classic botanicals such as juniper, ginger and pine needles. The ingredients are macerated for a day and then distilled in small copper stills. The result is an extremely multi-faceted gin that ranges from fruity and floral notes to subtle spiciness and fresh flavours.
As with a good dry gin, a subtle juniper note conveys a sense of tradition. Botanicals such as coriander seeds and angelica root contribute to the earthy notes. These are surrounded by the light freshness of orange peel and floral elements. A slight hint of sweetness develops on the tongue. Later, warm, spicy notes remain, which come from exotic spices such as ginger, cardamom and cubeb pepper. They make the gin appear exotic and give Elephant a certain recognisability.
